About South Dakota
South Dakota is full of world-class attractions, natural wonders and unbelievable beauty. You can go any direction in the state and find affordable experiences that lead to lifelong memories. From the towering pines and granite peaks of the Black Hills to the rolling bluffs and majestic rivers of our prairies, this is truly the land of Great Places.
South Dakota lays claim to one of the largest concentrations of public parks, monuments and memorials in the world. The most famous is America’s Shrine of Democracy, Mount Rushmore National Memorial. The majestic, 60-foot faces of four U.S. presidents gaze out over South Dakota’s Black Hills National Forest and provide a monumental history lesson for all who come to see them. You’ll also find the world’s largest ongoing mountain carving, Crazy Horse Memorial; the world’s second- and fourth-longest caves, Wind Cave National Park and Jewel Cave National Monument; the moon-like scenery of Badlands National Park; and one of the few stretches of the Missouri River that is still as free-flowing as it was in the days of Lewis and Clark.
